Omos discussed the popularity of wrestling in Nigeria during a recent appearance on INSIGHT with Chris Van Vliet. Omos claims that before returning to his home country, he had no idea how well-received he would be because of his participation in the one genuine sport.
Truthfully, it wasn’t until I returned home to see relatives last year that I realized the scope of our fan base. People all around Africa, not just in Nigeria, are still paying attention. After being away for 14 years, I finally made it back to my hometown. When normal day labourers saw me walking about, they yelled, “Omos! Omos!” To be honest, I was unprepared for such a warm welcome.
However, soon after we visited Saudi Arabia last year, Braun and I saw the vice president of Nigeria, and he said that his children were watching the pay-per-view. The President is all, “We saw you, what are you doing here,” so you should probably just get back home. I feel like I’ve come home to see my relatives. We just watched you a few days ago in Saudi Arabia, he says, demonstrating his familiarity with WWE. Wow, I had no idea this was so popular in the States until now. MVP recently discussed Omos’ potential with WrestleZone. He believes The Nigerian Giant is a future world champion in the making, but that misinformed spectators may be quick to condemn his talents.
The ‘Nigerian Giant’ boasts resources that are unique among WWE’s other giants. And I do see that people have a tendency to be too harsh on him, but he’s just been in the business for four years, and in four years he’ll be facing Brock Lesnar at WrestleMania, and he’ll be 30 years old, so he’s got another ten to fifteen years ahead of him in his career. A young Nigerian behemoth, then. Omos adds a lot to the table, and it would be a pity if folks who aren’t as intellectually astute or educated as us didn’t see that. They’ll come around to Omos’s brilliance eventually, and that’s when he’ll be WWE champion.
