In a series of coordinated operations across multiple states, the Nigerian Army, in collaboration with various security agencies, has successfully apprehended at least 15 individuals suspected of supplying arms and logistical support to terrorist groups, including Boko Haram. These operations have primarily taken place in Taraba, Kaduna, and Yobe states, reflecting the military’s ongoing efforts to counteract terrorism and restore security in affected regions.
The operations yielded significant recoveries, including firearms, ammunition, and various logistical materials. On September 3, 2024, the Army released a statement detailing the successful capture of five suspects in Taraba State. The troops conducted a raid in Mararaba Donga and Manya villages within the Donga and Takum Local Government Areas, which resulted in the seizure of three AK-47 rifles, two fabricated rifles, two single-barrel guns, and two Dane guns, among other items. The operation was described as executed with precision, showcasing the military’s capability in tackling these threats.
In addition to the firearms, the troops recovered a substantial cache of ammunition, including 61 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition, eight live cartridges, and various logistical materials like handcuffs, a police helmet, and multiple mobile phones. The Army’s statement emphasized that this operation was part of a broader initiative to dismantle networks supporting terrorist activities in the region.
Meanwhile, in Yobe State, three suspected Boko Haram logistical suppliers were apprehended in Jimbal Village, located in the Tarmuwa Local Government Area. During preliminary investigations, these suspects revealed that they had been engaged in this illicit activity for over two years, often evading security checks by collaborating with local vigilante groups. The military seized three vehicles, five motorcycles, a large quantity of motorcycle tires, spare parts, and a significant amount of drugs from the suspects. Additionally, they found rolls of fabric intended for making uniforms for terrorists, along with a cash sum of 48,000 naira.
In Kaduna State, the military operations continued with the arrest of four gunrunners and logistical suppliers in Rijana village, Chikun Local Government Area. This operation led to the recovery of 30 rounds of 7.62mm ammunition, three mobile phones, and recharge cards valued at 100,000 naira, along with a substantial amount of cash totaling 1,532,900 naira.
The military’s efforts were not limited to these states. In Plateau State, three wanted kidnappers were apprehended in the Kabong community of Jos South Local Government Area, resulting in the seizure of a fabricated pistol and a cartridge. In Edo State, troops engaged in a sting operation succeeded in neutralizing a notorious kidnapper who had been terrorizing commuters in the Ubia community. This operation led to the recovery of an AK-47 rifle, a semi-automatic pump-action gun, and 18 live cartridges.
While these military operations have been underway, the security situation remains tense, particularly in Sokoto State, where suspected bandits ambushed police officers. In the early hours of September 3, 2024, Inspector Eze and a local vigilante officer were killed at a checkpoint along the Sokoto-Bodinga road. The Police Public Relations Officer, Ahmed Rufai, confirmed the ambush, stating that the officers were shot at close range. However, in a subsequent engagement, police forces managed to kill some bandits along the Sokoto-Isa road, recovering an AK-49 rifle in the process.
These developments underscore the ongoing challenges faced by Nigerian security forces in combating terrorism and banditry, highlighting the urgency of collaborative efforts among military, police, and local vigilante groups to restore peace and security across the nation. The military’s proactive measures reflect a commitment to dismantling terrorist networks and ensuring the safety of communities affected by violence.
