Edo State House of Assembly Deputy Speaker, Hon. Maria Edeko Omozele has condemned some Nigerian Politicians for being selfish and not sensitive to the plight of the people they are voted or appointed to serve. She therefore urged Edo Voters to vote for the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Barr. Asue Ighodalo and his deputy, Barr. Osarodion Ogie, in the September 21, Governorship election for good representation.
The Deputy Speaker who condemned the attitude of some politicians during a visit by Executive members of the Uromi Peoples Movement, UPM said it is very sad that Politicians of today are not like Chief Anthony Enahoro and others who served the people selflessly.
According to her, ” Some politicians now serve themselves, abandoning the people they are expected to serve. I schooled abroad, this is not how things are done. When I see the way our people are not having good representation, I can only conclude that the political class are very selfish.”
While noting that the nation is in serious problem, the Deputy Speaker also commended the Uromi Peoples Movement for planning to launch a book on the foremost Politician, Journalist and Statesman who first moved the motion for Nigeria’s Independence, Chief Anthony Enahoro.
“The project of documenting the contributions of Chief Anthony Enahoro to Nigeria’s Democracy is a sacrifice you are making and I commend the movement for even thinking about this idea. Since you have started, it means it is going to end. It is a good thing you are doing because there are several people that share the vision of what Chief Enahoro did.
A social development worker, Law teacher and former worker with the United Nations, Hon Edeko thanked the Movement for the visit, noting that, ” I am the first girl child to be appointed as Commissioner from Esan North East and I am your first daughter to become a parliamentarian which for me is something of serious concern because our parents work so hard to raise the girl child. There are several great women doing very well in their various fields and they cannot be wished away that they do not have anything to offer to the governance of their community or they do not have a role to play in the country.
” I celebrate this group, you are the first among our people that have come to congratulate me. Not the political people, and that means a lot to me. It means you recognize the office you have assigned me to. I say this because the country is not functioning well. We are all suffering, the elderly are not been cared for, the children, the vibrant group are not receiving care because certain persons have been running this country and they have destroyed the beautiful country that God gave to us,” she said.
According to her, “The leadership has not been sensitive to the needs of the people. They do not care, so I am very proud of your movement because what has been bothering my mind back home is that nobody is thinking of giving back to Uromi. I tell people wealth for me is vanity upon vanity. Some people may feel Chief Enahoro was not rich in worldly possessions, but he did a lot, and while the wealthy men will be forgotten, but Chief Enahoro will not be forgotten because he has done something very fundamental for this country.
“The House of Assembly Complex in Edo State is named after him and it is such things that will be used to remember us and not wealth. That is why I want you to vote for Asue Ighodalo and Osorodion Ogie because they have good intention for the people of Edo state
“For having an organization in Uromi, Esan North East local Government Area that is thinking of giving scholarships, providing security through giving working tools to Atanakpa, that is very commendable and it gladdens my heart.
“On the issue of security I have been working quietly behind the scene over the years with Rev Father John Bosco, AVM Okpere, CP Olumese before Atanakpa was birthed and His Royal Highness Zaiki, the Onojie of Uromi is a foundation person in terms of setting up security outfit in the whole of Esan.
“It is however sad that some persons are trying to discredit him and they do not even understand what is happening in Uromi. Atanakpa is a child of His Royal Highness, the Onojie of Uromi because of his concern for security.”
The President of Uromi Peoples Movement, Engr. Victor Okoduwa earlier disclosed that the movement has been engaged in several activities over decades now, such as giving out scholarships to indigent students, provision of working materials to Atanakpa vigilante two years ago, as well as other issues that have to do with security of life and properties in Uromi.
” We had planned to visit you since last year when you were elected and elevated as the Deputy Speaker of the State House of Assembly because it is part of our culture to visit any Uromi sons and daughters appointed or elected, to find any common area of collaboration to achieve certain things for the benefit of our people in Uromi.
Other members of the UPM during the visit include the first vice President, Mr. Andy Oiboh, Mr. Eubaldus Enahoro, General Secretary, Mr. Anthony Okosun, Treasurer and Arc. Joseph Isiwele, former President of the Movement and a senior lecturer in Ambrose Ali University.
