The story of Ignazio da Carbonia: for months he has been sleeping in the car with his family in Legnano

“I work, I don’t steal. I work, I don’t steal.’ Ignazio Cadoni repeats it, so that it is clear that the situation in which he finds himself is not due to his indolence, but does everything to find accommodation for his family who have slept in the car for months in Legnano.

Originally from Carbonia, the story of Ignatius tells of great difficulty and great suffering. In April he lost his job and – he explained to the local press – “I had to decide whether to pay the rent or buy food”.

His partner and their two 7- and 8-year-old girls have now “started to smile again” because the “Il Sole nel Cuore” association in Legnano arranged for them to stay in a hotel. And a few days ago the third child was also born, who had respiratory problems and is still in the hospital. Mother Milena spent her pregnancy in the car, in sleeping bags.

Those who helped the Cadoni family are the many volunteers of the association who took the girls to school every morning and Ignazio can’t find words to thank them.

A decent salary and an employment contract – albeit a fixed-term one – were not enough to find accommodation: “Today you need at least 3,000 euros to rent a house”. Ignazio is in the (provisional) ranking to obtain a social housing, «I’m in about 70th place, I don’t even remember anymore, I’ve lost count».

For him this «was not Christmas, it will be when my son leaves the hospital and I will have a text on my head. No Christmas is celebrated for me this year.”
