The Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar, has officially declared today, Monday, March 11, 2024, as the first day of the month of Ramadan. As the spiritual leader of Muslims in Nigeria, the Sultan made the declaration based on the sighting of the moon in almost every part of the country on Sunday, which marked the 29th day of the Month of Shaban. This signifies that the first day of Ramadan 1445 falls on March 11.
In his statement, the Sultan urged the entire Muslim community in the country to begin fasting today in accordance with the teachings of Islam. He called on Muslims to use this holy month to pray against the spread of insecurity in the country and to pray for the leaders to discharge their duties with the fear of God. The Sultan also advised the wealthy to assist the underprivileged with food during this sacred month.
Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, also extended his greetings and congratulations to the Muslim Ummah in the state and around the world on the commencement of Ramadan 1445. Governor Makinde described Ramadan as a blessed month in which Allah rewards the worship of Muslims. He called for increased prayers for the country and the state, especially in light of the economic hardship facing the people. The governor emphasized that prayers remain essential during this time and that his administration is committed to mitigating the effects of the economic challenges.
Similarly, Dotun Babayemi, a former governorship aspirant in Osun State, urged Muslims to use the month of Ramadan to pray for the country. Babayemi emphasized the importance of having a positive attitude towards Nigeria and called on Nigerians to make tangible efforts and constant supplications to God during this fasting period. He encouraged collective responsibility in ensuring the success of the nation.
As Muslims embark on this month of spiritual reflection and devotion, it is hoped that their prayers and efforts will contribute to a safer and more prosperous Nigeria.
