On Wednesday, President Muhammadu Buhari introduced newly designed versions of the N1000, N5000, and N200 naira notes.
The event took place in the State House Council Chamber in Abuja just before the weekly Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting got underway.
The event was followed by remarks by Godwin Emefiele, governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), in which he reaffirmed the CBN’s commitment to its plan to transform Nigeria into a paperless economy.
He claims that security officers will keep tabs on those who withdraw big amounts of cash from ATMs and severely restrict the amount of cash that may be withdrawn over the counter.
Since there are over a million venues in the country where individuals may deposit old notes, he stressed that the deadline of January 31, 2023, will not be extended.
Emefiele claims that every five to eight years, the central bank must reform currency.
