In a tragic escalation of violence, an inter-cult clash in the Awarra and Ochia communities of Ohaji/Egbema Local Government Area in Imo State has resulted in the deaths of at least eight individuals. This alarming situation has drawn attention to the ongoing security challenges faced by the region, prompting community leaders to call for immediate intervention from both state authorities and law enforcement agencies.
A community leader, who spoke to on the condition of anonymity, expressed deep concern over the deteriorating security situation, lamenting the government’s failure to provide adequate protection against the violent activities of cult groups. “Eight people have so far been killed in this clash by the cultists here. Out of the eight lives lost in recent weeks, five were members of the rival cult groups, while three community members tragically slumped and died upon hearing the gunfire. Additionally, one person who was abducted remains missing,” he reported.
The leader emphasized the urgent need for the Nigeria Police and the Imo State Government to take decisive action to restore safety to the area. He revealed that many residents have fled their homes in fear and are now seeking refuge in neighboring communities such as Assa, Obile, Obosima, and Umuokanne. “Our people have become displaced and are suffering in makeshift shelters, including churches, where they face dire conditions without food or access to their homes and farmlands. This is particularly troubling in the current economic climate,” he stated.
In response to the ongoing violence, the communities of Awarra and Ochia have established a committee aimed at developing strategies to restore peace. The community leader expressed hope that this initiative would lead to effective measures for ensuring a safe environment, allowing residents to return to their normal lives. “We need peace to return to our communities so that people can lead their normal lives,” he added.
A youth leader from the area, who also requested anonymity due to safety concerns, provided additional context regarding the clashes, identifying them as a power struggle between rival cults vying for control over the lucrative proceeds from oil companies operating in the region. “It is a battle between two groups over who will control the financial benefits from the oil companies in Awarra and Ochia. One faction is led by a man known as Acid, while the other is headed by Achis, who is attempting to displace Acid’s group,” he explained.
The youth leader confirmed that at least four individuals had lost their lives during these conflicts but noted that some semblance of normalcy had returned following governmental intervention.
In reaction to the violence, Henry Okoye, the Imo State Police Public Relations Officer, acknowledged that the police had received numerous complaints regarding attacks by criminal elements in the affected areas. “The police have been actively working to restore peace in Ohaji. The Commissioner of Police has engaged in a series of meetings with local stakeholders to enhance security strategies,” Okoye stated.
He further assured that the police have made progress in managing the security situation, with several arrests made, and emphasized the importance of community cooperation in achieving long-lasting peace. “Ohaji’s security depends significantly on the engagement of the local population. The Commissioner of Police has made personal visits to the area, and the collaboration with stakeholders is yielding positive results,” he affirmed.
As the situation develops, the communities of Awarra and Ochia remain hopeful for a swift resolution to their plight, calling for sustained efforts from both law enforcement and local leaders to ensure the safety and security of all residents. The recent violence underscores the pressing need for comprehensive strategies to address the root causes of cultism and violence in the region, paving the way for a more peaceful future.
