The Federal Government of Nigeria has shut down 18 foreign universities operating in the country,

labeling them as “degree mills.” These universities include five from the United States, six from the United Kingdom, and three from Ghana.

The Ministry of Education also announced the temporary suspension of the evaluation and accreditation of degree certificates from the Republic of Benin and Togo.

This decision was made in response to an undercover investigative report that exposed the production of fake university degrees by officials of a Beninese university. The Ministry of Education is conducting an investigation in collaboration with the Ministries of Foreign Affairs and Education of Nigeria, as well as the Department of State Security Services and the National Youth Service Corps.

The National Association of Nigerian Students has appealed to the government to reconsider the suspension, considering its impact on legitimate students who have pursued their education in the affected countries.
