Time and time again, President Muhammadu Buhari has expressed his eagerness to cede control to his successor. On Tuesday, at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, Buhari gave remarks at a farewell meeting with outgoing U.S. Ambassador Mary Beth Leonard. President Buhari has expressed his eagerness to return to Daura, Katsina State, upon his retirement, where he intends to become a prominent landowner and tend to his fields and cattle.

To this aim, I intend to return to my homeland and establish a thriving real estate business, managing many farms and a herd of over 300 animals. He finally spoke up about his need to leave. In his farewell address, President Buhari praised the outgoing ambassador for the significant progress made in bilateral relations between Nigeria and the United States during her tenure. During her speech, the US ambassador remarked on the positive development of US-Nigeria relations during the past 3.5 years. She listed the recent implementation of a five-year visa regime between the two countries, active collaboration in security, the supply of military hardware like warplanes and the soon-to-be-delivered fighter helicopters, and cooperation in the health sector to combat HIV and COVID response as some of her accomplishments in office.
