Notable Elder Statesman Passes Away; President Buhari Responds

The passing of Dr. Paul Unongo has prompted President Muhammadu Buhari to extend his condolences to the people of Nigeria and to note that the nation has suffered the loss of an elder statesman.

Dr. Unongo served in a variety of political capacities and took part in constitutional talks during his time as both the head of the Northern Elders Forum (NEF) and the Minister of Steel Development under the Second Republic.

Unongo passed away on the 29th of November, 2022, when he was 87 years old.

Before passing away, Unongo served as Chairman of the Board of the Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council. During his lifetime, he held this position.

In a statement released on Tuesday night by presidential spokesperson Garba Shehu as a tribute, President Buhari recognized the strong relationship he had with the dead. He also said that “in all the roles he had as a politician and public official, he demonstrated a high degree of etiquette.” He was a public figure of enormous stature who was also quite intelligent and humorous. He was dedicated to serving both his local community and his country.

“Please accept my sincere condolences on behalf of myself, the Benue State administration, and the people of Benue State,”
