In a heartfelt initiative aimed at making a difference in the lives of children with autism, artist Ekene Ngige has launched his solo art exhibition titled “This Little Light of Mine.” The exhibition commenced on November 3, 2024, at the Nomadic Art Gallery, located in the vibrant Victoria Island area of Lagos, and is set to run until December 14, 2024. This exhibition not only showcases Ngige’s artistic talents but also serves a noble cause, as a portion of the proceeds from an auction piece will directly support programs and initiatives dedicated to children with autism.
“This Little Light of Mine” features a stunning collection of coffee paintings that capture the essence of childhood, focusing on themes of optimism and resilience. Each piece in the exhibition is a testament to the light of hope that is crucial for nurturing children, particularly those facing challenges such as autism. Ngige’s artistry reflects a deep understanding of the struggles and aspirations of children, making his work both poignant and uplifting.
Ngige’s journey into coffee painting began in 2015, and he has since dedicated himself to this unique medium, abandoning other forms of painting in favor of the rich, textured results that coffee can produce. His choice to use coffee is not only a creative decision but also a symbolic representation of the warmth and nurturing qualities he wishes to convey through his art.
In discussing the inspiration behind the exhibition, Ngige shared a personal story that resonates with his mission. As a child, he experienced a medical error that could have derailed his dreams. Despite the challenges he faced, he held on to his aspirations of becoming either an animator or a doctor. “I couldn’t let go of Fine Art even if my parents wanted me to study medicine. This is the little light of man, and every child has theirs,” Ngige explained. “There is a light that leads every child to their dream no matter how life has treated them. It helps them to focus.”
Through “This Little Light of Mine,” Ngige aims to illuminate the paths of children who may feel lost or hindered by their circumstances. His work serves as a reminder that every child possesses a unique light that can guide them towards their dreams, no matter the obstacles they may encounter.
The exhibition not only highlights Ngige’s artistic achievements but also emphasizes the importance of community support for children with autism. By attending the exhibition and participating in the auction, visitors are not merely enjoying art; they are contributing to a cause that seeks to uplift and empower some of society’s most vulnerable members.
As the exhibition continues until mid-December, it offers a wonderful opportunity for art lovers and supporters of children with autism to engage with meaningful artwork while contributing to a worthy cause. Ngige’s dedication to both his craft and the well-being of children shines brightly through this initiative, making
