A Review of Citation (Directed by Kunle Afolayan)

Citation is a Nigerian movie directed by Kunle Afolayan focusing on the issue of sexual harassment on university campuses. The movie tells the story of a young postgraduate student Moremi, who must confront her lecturer, Professor Lucien Nd’yara, over accusations of sexual harassment.

The film is a well-executed drama with superb cinematography, sound design, and captivating acting performance by the cast, particularly newcomer Temi Otedola, who played the lead role of Moremi. The movie also features veteran actors like Joke Silva, Sadiq Daba, Jimmy Jean-Louis, and Ini Edo, who added their skills to make the movie a success.

One of the outstanding features of this film is its ability to explore the cultural background of its setting, thereby creating the right atmosphere for the story to unfold. The movie takes us through the scenes of the University of Lagos, the Lagos metro, and up to Cape Verde while portraying the beauty of African heritage, which enhances the film’s narrative. The pace of the movie is quite slow at the beginning, but it builds up gradually and picks up the momentum as the story progresses.

However, the movie has received criticisms for portraying a one-sided narrative on sexual harassment, thereby failing to acknowledge the complexities involved. The movie focuses on the victim’s point of view and portrays all lecturers as sexual predators, thereby neglecting the fact that some students could also make false accusations against lecturers.

In conclusion, Citation is an excellent movie that succeeded in bringing to the fore the issue of sexual harassment, which is prevalent in many universities around the world. Although the film’s one-sided narrative is a drawback, it does not detract from the overall quality of the film. I recommend Citation to anyone who loves intense drama and wants to learn more about sexual harassment on university campuses.
